Keke Palmer and I share a connection that feels like we matured alongside one another—at least that's how it seems in my imagination. On lazy Saturday afternoons, I would snuggle up on the sofa with a tasty treat to catch episodes of True Jackson, VP, the beloved Nickelodeon series featuring an 18-year-old Palmer as the supremely stylish teenager managing a fashion empire. The program premiered in 2011, coinciding with my twelfth birthday, and Palmer came across as the ideal older sister beaming from my television screen. As the years rolled by, I followed her on-screen transformation from a witty adolescent to a prolific actress appearing in standout movies such as One of Them Days and Nope. Meanwhile, I was navigating my own path to adulthood. Our recent Zoom conversation carried an unexpectedly emotional tone, as we connected over the challenges of rinsing our young children's hair and carving out precious moments for self-care amid the demands of motherhood and careers.
This wave of reminiscence intensified when we delved into her fresh collaboration with Creme of Nature, where she now holds the position of chief brand officer. For countless Black girls, Creme of Nature products were an essential part of childhood routines, Palmer notes. They were a reliable fixture during wash days, invariably stocked in the family bathroom. For her, this alliance seemed perfectly aligned: both she and the brand boast deep-rooted histories as originals, and her role in guiding Creme of Nature toward a contemporary evolution mirrors her own professional growth and adaptability.
At 32 years old, Palmer is stepping into a vibrant new phase of life, prioritizing genuineness and adaptability across all facets of her existence. This shift aligns seamlessly with her latest hairstyle evolution: a lively pixie cut that she unveiled back in August 2025. In the following exchange, she shares candid insights into the dramatic haircut, her choice to revisit relaxers, and the personal beauty practices she's introducing to her young son.
What Sparked Your Decision for the Pixie Cut After Seven Months?
Allure: You've been sporting your pixie cut for roughly seven months. What prompted such a daring transformation?
Keke Palmer: Over the last year, I've experimented extensively with my hair—particularly since gaining unlimited access to Creme of Nature's lineup—while striving to preserve its health amid coloring treatments and establishing a steady maintenance regimen. Eventually, I reached a turning point where the upkeep became overwhelming. I craved a style that synchronized with my fast-paced lifestyle.
I'm not prepared for a completely shaved head just yet. The pixie allows me to retain that edge, personality, and flair without demanding constant attention. Currently, I'm rocking a boy-band-inspired vibe with spiked ends that I'm absolutely loving—it's pure fun.
How Do You Keep the Pixie Looking Sharp?
Allure: What's your maintenance routine for this style?
Palmer: Every two weeks, I trim the sides and the nape. I allow the crown to lengthen slightly and refresh my relaxer application every four weeks.
Many assume a pixie is high-maintenance, but with quality foam, effective edge control for added definition and texture, and the confidence to let your natural curl pattern peek through, it becomes enjoyable and touchable. Buildup can accumulate easily, so I swear by scalp wipes for my hairline and the back to keep everything fresh and clean.
What Drew You Back to Relaxers, and How Did It Feel?
Allure: What led you to opt for a relaxer once more, and how was the process for you?
Palmer: I've fully explored the natural hair journey. Last year, I committed to it wholeheartedly, proudly showcasing my afro especially following my work on Nope. I reveled in experimenting with my hair in its purest form. That phase was truly rewarding. However, I yearned for versatility and refused to feel restricted by any single approach.
My goal is authentic self-expression. One day, I'm channeling India Arie vibes; the next, something entirely different. It's all about liberation and adaptability. I champion women making their own choices. As Black women, we're often bombarded with societal dictates on beauty standards and hairstyles, and I sensed that pressure intensely earlier this year.
I grew weary of constant wigs and meticulously glued-down edges. Lately, I've gravitated toward low-effort elegance, embodied by the pixie and a relaxer. Long hair isn't my focus right now—I want to highlight my facial features and radiant energy. When I enter a space, I desire my complete essence to shine through.
How Do You Choose Your Daily Style Persona?
Allure: How do you determine which version of yourself to embody each day?
Palmer: It hinges on the message or mood I aim to convey. My current projects heavily influence the direction—be it music-related endeavors, showcasing my vibrant personality, a sultry photoshoot, or anything else. I collaborate closely with my stylists, embracing playfulness in the process.
Overall, my aesthetic right now emphasizes liberation, precision, and sincerity. That's a key reason the pixie resonates so deeply—it's the epitome of exactness and structure in a haircut. Yet, it also liberates me from conventional expectations tied to lengthy tresses.
Which Grooming Rituals Are You Sharing with Your Son?
Allure: What beauty and haircare traditions are you eager to pass on to your little boy?
Palmer: I cherish our dedicated hair sessions, whether it's his professional stylist at work or me taking the reins. These moments boost his confidence, reminding him he's valued and pampered. Consistency in his routine is paramount, and it's equally vital for mothers to claim these self-nurturing pauses through haircare. I've instilled in him the importance of washing, conditioning, and opting for protective hairstyles.
He alternates between braids and his natural afro puff. I apply the same trusted products from my routine to his hair. The real challenge? Convincing him to keep a hair scarf in place—it's an ongoing adventure. We desperately need a line of durable baby durags pronto.
